ASSIST IN EXCAVATION AND SUPPORT INSTALLATION
(off the job training component)
PURPOSE
This unit aims to provide construction workers with the knowledge and skills necessary to assist in excavation and support installation.
RELATIONSHIP TO COMPETENCY STANDARDS
National Construction Industry competency framework prescribed under unit BCC 2003A Assist in Excavation and Support Installation forms the foundation for the development of this training module.
PREREQUISITES
Competencies or modules required for entry into this module are:
· basic industry unit of competency appropriate to work orientation
· basic stream skills unit of competency appropriate to work orientation.
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Trainees who have completed appropriate training or who, through prior learning and
experience, believe that they have gained the required skill/competency stipulated for this
module may be granted credit upon substantiation of that claim.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
TOPIC ONE - OVERVIEW AND SAFETY
Outcome: Demonstrate safe work practices and procedures within the site.
Assessment: Undertake the self-assessment for the topic and when satisfied with
progress, proceed onto the next topic.
TOPIC TWO - TRENCHING AND EXCAVATION
Outcome: Demonstrate the ability to correctly identify and describe the planning,
digging and ground support methods used in excavation and trenching duties.
Assessment: Undertake a self-assessment for the topic and when satisfied with progress,
proceed onto the next topic.
TOPIC THREE - SUPPORT INSTALLATION
Outcome: Demonstrate the ability to correctly identify various support methods and
to safely and efficiently assist in the placement of support installations.
Assessment: Undertake the self-assessment for the topic and when satisfied with
progress, proceed onto the next topic.

TOPIC FOUR - PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT
Outcome: Demonstrate competence in all aspects of assisting with excavation and
support installations.
Assessment : Undertake a practical and theoretical assessment in which the trainee will answer questions on assisting with excavation and support installation in accordance
with the assessment instrument provided.
