LAY PIPES
(off the job training component)
PURPOSE
This module aims to provide pipe layers with the knowledge and skills necessary to correctly lay pipes in accordance with accepted pipe laying practices and construction drawings/specifications.
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Trainees who have completed appropriate training or who, through prior learning and
experience, believe that they have gained the required skill/competency stipulated for this
module may be granted credit upon substantiation of that claim.

TOPIC ONE - OVERVIEW AND SAFETY
Outcome: On completing this topic, the trainee should be able to:
1.1 Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the different types and uses of pipes.
1.2 Identify the hazards that can be encountered in the workplace, and state the measures that are in place to minimise the risk to personal safety.

TOPIC TWO - JOB PLANNING AND PREPARATION
Outcome: On completing this topic, the trainee should be able to:
2.1 State the preparations that should be undertaken at the commencement of the job.
2.2 Demonstrate correct techniques for the receival, storage, movement and handling of PVC, steel and concrete pipes.
Assessment: Undertake the self-assessment for the topic and when satisfied with

TOPIC THREE - TRENCHING AND SUPPORT
Outcome: On completing this topic, the trainee should be able to:
3.1 Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the trenching process including setting out and excavating the trench, trench support requirements and the purpose of bedding.

TOPIC FOUR - LAYING AND JOINTING PIPES
Outcome: On completing this topic, the trainee should be able to:
4.1 State the requirements for laying pipes.
4.2 Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the correct jointing methods used for PVC, steel and concrete pipes.
Assessment: Undertake the self-assessment for the topic and when satisfied with
progress, proceed onto the next topic.
TOPIC FIVE - EMBEDMENT
Outcome: On completing this topic, the trainee should be able to:
5.1 Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the embedment and compaction
requirements for PVC, steel and concrete pipes.

TOPIC SIX - PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT
Outcome: On completing this topic, the trainee should be able to demonstrate
competence in all aspects of laying pipes.
Assessment: Undertake a competency-based assessment, where the trainee will be required to demonstrate to an assessor that he/she can correctly, safely and efficiently lay pipes in accordance with job's specifications and accepted pipe laying techniques.
